Bank of New Zealand Fast-Tracks Deployment
Download: English
The Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) has selected March Networks 4000 C Series NVRs for an enterprise-wide video surveillance deployment to 180 branches throughout the island nation. The March Networks systems allow BNZ investigators based in Auckland to quickly and easily resolve incidents of fraud and present video evidence to law enforcement agencies.

Bank Security

Banks are unique organisations. Their product is money. For this reason they are often the target of an attack. Banks have many areas that need protection from a security perspective and then, like other organisations they have other requirements too in other departments.

Where there are many branches it may not be feasible to guard them all and it would make sense to have them remotely monitored. Installing video based intrusion alarms can allow the guard at the central monitoring station to see the intruder, confirm that it is not a false alarm and take some action.

Retail Banks also have use for the more traditional applications such as Counting and Queue Management. In fact customer service may be a far more important issue as it is usually part of the value proposition of the bank.

The ATMs (automatic teller machines) that many banks have outside their branches and in unmanned locations such as shopping malls are also the targets for criminals. The latest attempt at identity theft centres on the installation of very small devices above the slot where the customer is supposed to enter his card. These devices can copy the identity information from the magnetic strip. The bank needs to detect if such a device has been implanted by criminals on their ATM. A camera (with an IQ 180 level system) could identify a small device that had been placed on their ATM and the bank could then take action to remove it as well as to identify who installed the device. Securities Commission Headquarters Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia by Johnson Controls

The new Malaysia Securities Commission Headquarters facility was designed around the
concept of achieving a distinctive modern form, interpreted from traditional design to
reflect Malaysia’s history, cultural roots and future aspirations. The roof, together with
the layered facade, shelters the building from the tropical heat and glare. The facade
is designed to be climatically responsive to the external environment.

The entire building facade has a hollow double skin, which forms a buffer between indoor
and outdoor temperatures and climatic conditions. As a result, transparency to and
from the building is optimized, daylight is maximized and energy consumption is greatly
reduced. The building made history when it was built since it is Malaysia’s first modern
facility with fully ductless air conditioning. Cold air is supplied through the raised floor.
The facility also offers the first truly flexible office work environment which allows easy
reconfiguration of air supply grills, power, communications, data, central vacuum, central
shredder and IT systems. Johnson Controls was given the task of designing an open,
integrated building management and control system for the facility.

Case study: Clackamas County, Oregon City, Oregon by Johnson Controls

Clackamas County is a growing Oregon community of 362,000 with a mix of urban and
rural populations with divergent needs. County workers had outgrown existing space
at 17 offi ces spread out around the county. Many of these were outdated facilities with
operations costs increasing year after year. County leaders knew they needed a new
centralized facility and wanted to build it with minimal impact on the environment. But
with limited public funds, they were concerned about the ability to build and operate a
building in a timely manner to take advantage of low interest rates and availability
of construction materials.

Through a unique design-build-operate process in partnership with Johnson Controls,
Inc. and others, Clackamas County was able to swiftly construct a cost-effective and
sustainable building with the County’s fi nancial and environmental goals in mind. The
Public Services Building (PSB) at the Red Soils campus combines several departments
at a centralized facility to provide better services for citizens.

Case study, Ave Maria University, Ave Maria, Florida by Johnson Controls

Ave Maria University, located in southwest Florida, opened its doors to students on
August 27, 2007. Ave Maria is the first new Catholic university built in the United States in more than 40 years and among the world’s most technologically advanced, thanks to the steadfast vision of its founder and design team.

By employing the industry best practice of technology contracting and Johnson Controls, Ave Maria successfully converged 23 systems from information technology (IT) to facility operations, on a single Internet protocol (IP) network.

The university is the product of, founder and chancellor, Thomas S. Monaghan’s dream
to build an institution of higher education that would be faithful to the teachings of the
Catholic Church. After more than five years of planning and construction, and four years
of operating from a temporary campus in Naples, the university made its permanent
home on a 908-acre campus in a new town named just for it - Ave Maria, Florida.
The campus has 500,000 square feet of facilities, serving nearly 500 students and 200
faculty and staff, and plenty of room to grow.

Case Study - Perimeter Security for Building Security by Mobotix

Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena

Since 2001 the institute is residing in a new, modern building on the Beutenberg campus in Jena. With 7,400 square meters of primary floorspace, some 1,500 square meters of greenhouse capacity and an annual budget of around EUR 10 million, the institute’s 270 research scientists and employees from 19 different countries have plenty of opportunities to study this exceptionally complex area of ecology – and to create a new basis for sustainable, environmentally friendly agriculture.

Safeguarding Research

To protect the modern building and the institute’s valuable equipment, as urveillance system was installed in July 2004, in which 32 MOBOTIX IP cameras play an integral role.

Valuable Equipment - Day and Night Security

For Johan Brandenburg, technical director at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology, protecting the building has exceptionally high priority: "A tour research center , we have a lot of expensiv equipment, some of which cost as much as EUR 2 million, which we completely rely on for the purposes of our work. In addition, the building is quite remote and accessible from all sides - making it a potential target for vandals and burglars." For a period of almost three years, a security company was responsible for protecting the building. "However, we were unable to achieve a satisfactory solution for round-the-clock surveillance. Security guards simply can't be at every single vulnerable point at the same time," explains Johan Brandenburg. "It became clear to us that we could only achieve the degree of protection we wanted with the aid of a powerful camera system."

Le Méridien Parkhotel Frankfurt

In the middle of the hectic Frankfurt banking district, tranquility can be found at the traditional Le Méridien Parkhotel Frankfurt (www.lemeridien.com). Located in the idyllic Wiesenhüttenplatz, a street surrounded by trees, the hotel, which was built in 1905, offers its guests a superior standard of comfort as well as a discreet and courteous service with all the flair of a grand old establishment. Guests are guaranteed a haven of comfort and relaxation, whether they opt for a room imbued with the art nouveau of the historical palace or a newly refurnished room in the exclusive business wing, complete with plasma TVs, light maple furniture and modern lighting. Comfort Requires Security

A reliable security system, which remains discreetly in the background, is indispensable for making guests feel at ease in the three-hundred room building. High-performance camera surveillance in sensitive areas creates safety and trust, forming an essential basis for comfortable relaxation.

High Security, Low Investment

After investigating the market in detail, Chief Engineer Zlatko Hizman, who is responsible for building services at Le Méridien Parkhotel Frankfurt, recommended an IP camera system from MOBOTIX to the hotel management. Previously, 21 analogue cameras were in use, yet several factors sealed the fate of this antiquated solution: the high degree of maintenance, low resolution, large memory requirements and complex evaluation of recordings, to name but a few.

The time was right for an IP-based alternative, capable of fulfilling future requirements. Not only did this system impress with its technical superiority, but it also demonstrated many cost benefits in terms of procurement and operation.

Case Study - Stadium Security by Mobotix

Fritz-Walter Stadium

During the 2006 World Cup Championship in Germany, Kaiserslautern was one of the 12 World Cup Cities to host the games. Fritz-Walter Stadium on the Betzenberg hilltop was the venue of four games in the preliminary rounds and one quarter-final. Kaiserslautern has 105,000 inhabitants, making it the smallest World Cup city in which a second stage (last 16) game has ever been played.

Cutting-Edge Video Surveillance
As part of a start-of-the-art video surveillance system, 77 MOBOTIX cameras helped to ensure the security and safety of the football fans during the World Cup.

Keeping Track

“I knew from the beginning that video surveillance would be important,” said Chief Superintendent Uwe Giertzsch, who was also involved in developing the security concept for the 2006 World Cup in Kaiserslautern. “As police, we wanted to be visible, but to avoid anything that may make people feel uncomfortable, not to mention threatened. Nevertheless, it was vital that we maintain an overview of the situation at all times. To do so, we needed highly-detailed images of the situation on location in order to be able to recognize possible disturbances early and make the right decisions quickly.”

Based on the requirements of the security staff, GPC GmbH (www.it-gpc.de), an independent engineering office, drew up the documents for the tendering procedure. They included a sophisticated video surveillance system that would be able to provide images of a wide area as well as to zoom in to capture full-format images of specific individuals.

Case study:
Securities Commission Headquarters Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Case Study - Garage Security by Mobotix

Auto-Schöttle

We know most of our 800 car dealership customers personally. As a result, we can offer them very individualized service, which distinguishes us from our larger competitors.” For Heinrich Krawietz, co-owner and managing director of Auto-Schöttle in Stuttgart-Botnang, consistent customer care is not just another slick marketing phrase. In his dealership, word is worth just as much as a signed contract. Hard work, cost savings, trust, honesty and openness are virtues that are lived on a daily basis and never go out of style. Together with his 15 employees, the master car mechanic is continuing a tradition that was founded more than 50 years ago.Danger Zone

Once quite common, the combination of a gas station with a car dealership is something you don’t see very often anymore. For Heinrich Krawietz, however, the gas station presents an opportunity to win customers for the dealership repair shop. Running a gas station, however, does involve certain security risks. After all, now that gas prices keep on climbing, gas theft has also been on the rise over the past few years. To try stop these so-called ‘gas-up-and-run’ customers, two small analog surveillance cameras, each with a miniature screen, had already been installed in 1993. “But these cameras did not have a recording function, which means we would have had to watch them all the time,” reported Heinrich Krawietz.

Alaska Airlines Uses Video Surveillance to Reduce Losses and Improve Operating Performance

Download: English
Operating video surveillance systems in isolated locations like Barrow, Alaska, the northernmost community in the United States, requires more than the usual confidence in hardware reliability. Given the sheer distance from supply centers, the howling winds, blowing snow and temperatures exceeding minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit, equipment problems can be very expensive.

Retail Business Security

Reduce shrink, address risk and improve overall store performance with VideoSphere retail solutions from March Networks. Our solutions combine IP video systems and analytics with powerful management software and dynamic web-based reporting. They help loss prevention investigators identify fraudulent activity quickly and effectively, and provide operations managers with timely information to track top product sales, cashier performance, store safety, compliance and more.

• Convenience Store Operators
Convenience store managers eager to combat drive-offs at the pump can capture high-resolution images of license plates using our powerful IP cameras and video recording systems. With crystal-clear evidence in hand, managers are able to work with law enforcement authorities to identify non-paying customers and seek restitution. Extreme LP software features, such as drawer alarm alerts, prepaid fuel reports and voids by type, offer further operational efficiencies. In addition, our video recording systems enable onsite staff to review and quickly copy clips to USB flash memory or CDs without requiring a PC; system and configuration management remains with head office personnel.

• Grocery Store Chains
Missed bottom-of-the-basket (BOB) items or improperly identified produce can be proactively addressed with our VideoSphere retail solutions. A store or operations manager who observes that several Key Performance Indicators (e.g. Sales/Hour, Sales/Customer and Value/Item) are lower than normal can quickly review video clips to ascertain the cause. Perishable shrink, significant due to theft, spoilage and identification errors, can be similarly addressed.

• Quick Service Restaurants
QSR franchise owners can use our retail solutions to deter theft and vandalism. Key standard searches identify questionable transactions complete with associated video, automatic email alerts allow managers to take immediate action, and our IP video recording systems allow onsite staff to review and quickly copy clips to USB flash memory or CD without a PC.

Case Study - Chemical Business Security by Mobotix

Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena

Since 2001 the institute is residing in a new, modern building on the Beutenberg campus in Jena. With 7,400 square meters of primary floorspace, some 1,500 square meters of greenhouse capacity and an annual budget of around EUR 10 million, the institute’s 270 research scientists and employees from 19 different countries have plenty of opportunities to study this exceptionally complex area of ecology – and to create a new basis for sustainable, environmentally friendly agriculture.

Safeguarding Research

To protect the modern building and the institute’s valuable equipment, as surveillance system was installed in July 2004, in which 32 MOBOTIX IP cameras play an integral role.

Case Study - Hotel Business Security by Mobotix

Cargo Security
Applications in ports can be very similar to those in airports with a key difference.

Most ports today tend to handle cargo rather than passengers. The applications are therefore skewed towards managing and protecting cargo as well as ships.
The larger ports have large container storage areas where containers are stored before they are loaded on to a ship (or when they are unloaded). Though containers are very large items they too can be the target for thieves if they contain a valuable cargo. A theft detection system similar to one used in a warehouse can be very helpful here. Every time a container is moved the event is recorded. If a container disappears it is then an easy matter to identify the last persons who moved it.

Ports authorities have a responsibility to protect ships within their harbour. On the land side this security can be provided with fencing and other physical barriers. On the sea side a video based system can be used to detect small boats that might come to near one of the big ships parked there. Download PDF.

City Security
City Surveillance needs can be quite varied. There will be groups that are responsible for protecting building assets. Graffiti and Vandalism detection can be an important application for them. Traditional motion detection systems can detect graffiti but they would also detect all the many passersby on the street. A non-motion detection algorithm based system is required (IQ 140) to detect the graffiti while ignoring innocent people who are just walking past. In one European city they had a very severe graffiti problem. Each time the buildings were repainted the graffiti artists struck again. Repainting buildings can be very expensive and hence the city council had to find a solution. They put in an IQ 140 level Graffiti detection system mounted on a van. Using infrared cameras the system was able to catch the culprits on the first day after it was installed. The news spread very quickly among graffiti artists and the problem disappeared overnight – at least in their neighbourhood.

Other groups will require the city surveillance system to monitor traffic. Often there are special slow speed zones near schools or beside shopping malls and hospitals Monitoring such locations has traditionally been very expensive because the detection of speed and the recognition of vehicles previously required significant civil works such as the digging of roads for the laying of magnetic loops as well as very expensive cameras. With modern systems where the video analysis system can do everything (triggering of the event, detection and recognition) the economics have changed and these systems can be widely implemented at a tenth of the cost of the traditional systems.

The most important focus of city surveillance systems however is on the people themselves. The objective is to keep people safe and prevent accidents or criminal activities. Not all activities are easy to detect. As has been discussed it is very difficult to detect if two people are fighting as this can take many different forms.

However many associated behaviours can be detected. For instance, if a person falls down as a result of a fight, this can be detected. If a person begins to run suddenly – this too can be detected. If crowds gather suddenly this could be a symptom of some unusual activity as well. Having a system that can monitor various types of human behaviour can help the city’s officials ensure the safety of their citizens. Download PDF

The
