The Security Manager and the social media threat

Situation - Position - Implications

The Security Manager that is not on facebook, linkedin, the one that is conscious about social media and the one that has no idea about the impact of social media.

Suppose the biggest fear is when the Security manager or their staff are going viral when they are either doing something illegal or sleeping on the job. Millions of phones have video recording capabilities and therefore there could be witnesses recording and within a couple of hours - millions will find out.

Keeping in mind.

Should HR or the SM pay attention to social media and/or pay attention to social media in order to gather information for situational awareness - know the position of others in order to consider the implications?

We have not researched the lone-wolf attacks to find out their social network habit, however, we do know from watching the media that most have left video clips supporting their cause.

Would you recruit an IS supporter, A Xenophobic person that likes hate-speech comments as a security expert, personnel or for that matter - any position in the company?

Some Security Managers suggested to HR for staff to sign confidentiality agreements taking social media into consideration.

Could employees or contractors support extremist groups, pro or anti abortion groups, have compassion for certain political war-torn cultures, disagree with hate-groups, or vent their personal or emotional positions with their partners or kids? What could be the impact on insider threat doing something voluntarily or become a victim of blackmail, extortion or bullying.

Security Managers can detect if a person is SMDA Social Media Detrimental Active or becoming radicalized, xenophobic tendencies, being bullied, blackmailed or extorted by using a specific skill-set and mastering the skill-craft. Within seconds they should b able to determine the threat.

Security Success depends on the level of situational awareness of the decision maker on the ground and the reaction speed

The manager therefore must be able to evaluate - interview and investigate ( using investigative interviewing methods) and be trained to the degree to deduce and react within seconds. Simply, situational awareness is knowing - 'THE TRUTH TO WHAT IS GOING ON'' as any action based on unreliable or insufficient information would be detrimental.

The easiest and most effective method to acquire the skill-set and master the skill-craft is ISIO Approved and Supported MIM HIM [Human Investigation Management]or HIM for non security professionals
