Airport – Host of the 2006 Winter Olympics By Secure-Globe The city of Turin, located in Northern Italy very close to the Italian Alps was chosen to be the hosting city for the 2006 Winter Olympics. The airport
of Turin, located at Caselle, several kilometers from Turin became the
subject of large scale planning and a huge expansion project. The aim
was to be able to accommodate the large increase in travel traffic which
would accompany the 2006 Winter Olympics. The airport’s,
old mesh linked, fence perimeter is approximately 10 km long and incorporates
both civil as well as military facilities. In the summer of 2004 the only
protection for this high profile site was this old mesh linked fence and
a casual military patrol driving along the perimeter fence (which some
times even damaged the fence when the driver fell asleep). Contrary to the state of the perimeter protection, entry and exit from the airport was tightly controlled by customs and police stationed at the main entrance gates. Getting entry permits was an elaborate exercise requiring a thorough check of the person’s credentials and background. The state of security of Turin airport’s perimeter until the summer of 2004 was in principle no different than the security at 90% of the International airports around the world read more Professional View Point by Raphael Kahn
