Shadow Archiving in Video Surveillance Systems
Fail Safe Recording Options for IP Edge Devices

Download pdf white paper which outlines,

Executive Summary

IP video systems can be vulnerable to interruptions caused by network faults, server failures or power outages, and the cost of mitigating these risks has traditionally been high. Shadow Archiving™ introduces a high level of fault tolerance at an economical cost.

Onboard memory in IP cameras and encoders is utilized to provide distributed video redundancy and enable direct client software access, as well as compile a mapped directory on the VMS – the Shadow Archive.

Introduction

Shadow Archiving is an innovative feature that offers significant benefits to video surveillance systems, and establishes a path for the future development of virtual storage technology.

The Shadow Archive is defined as a directory that maps the video of all onboard edge device storage to a central VMS and is accessible via client software.
That is, it forms a “shadow” on the central VMS archive of all the video data available on
IP cameras and encoders with onboard storage or a direct NAS connection.

Reduce shrink, address risk and improve overall store performance with VideoSphere retail solutions from March Networks. Our solutions combine IP video systems and analytics with powerful management software and dynamic web-based reporting. They help loss prevention investigators identify fraudulent activity quickly and effectively, and provide operations managers with timely information to track top product sales, cashier performance, store safety, compliance and more.

• Convenience Store Operators
Convenience store managers eager to combat drive-offs at the pump can capture high-resolution images of license plates using our powerful IP cameras and video recording systems. With crystal-clear evidence in hand, managers are able to work with law enforcement authorities to identify non-paying customers and seek restitution. Extreme LP software features, such as drawer alarm alerts, prepaid fuel reports and voids by type, offer further operational efficiencies. In addition, our video recording systems enable onsite staff to review and quickly copy clips to USB flash memory or CDs without requiring a PC; system and configuration management remains with head office personnel.

• Grocery Store Chains
Missed bottom-of-the-basket (BOB) items or improperly identified produce can be proactively addressed with our VideoSphere retail solutions. A store or operations manager who observes that several Key Performance Indicators (e.g. Sales/Hour, Sales/Customer and Value/Item) are lower than normal can quickly review video clips to ascertain the cause. Perishable shrink, significant due to theft, spoilage and identification errors, can be similarly addressed.

• Quick Service Restaurants
QSR franchise owners can use our retail solutions to deter theft and vandalism. Key standard searches identify questionable transactions complete with associated video, automatic email alerts allow managers to take immediate action, and our IP video recording systems allow onsite staff to review and quickly copy clips to USB flash memory or CD without a PC.

Bank Security

Financial institutions of all sizes are embracing the value that intelligent video and video systems bring to their organizations. Benefits can include improved employee and customer safety, enhanced teller and ATM transaction records, faster detection, investigation and resolution of fraud cases, stronger liability management, and more efficient operation in marketing, customer service and other departments.

These improvements have a fundamental impact on the business health of the institution, and its ability to compete for customers and grow effectively.
March Networks provides IP-based video systems and software to address the specific needs of financial institutions, from ATM/self-service kiosks or vestibules to retail banking centers to corporate facilities, data centers and cash management depots.

Intelligent video platforms and networks provide, for example, remote monitoring of alarms at self-service locations, integration of complete ATM or Teller transaction details in retail banking centers, and clear, detailed surveillance of data centers and cash or securities handling activity in corporate facilities.

Visual intelligence that automatically detects and alerts personnel to activity of a nature, or in an area, or at a time that is inconsistent with official policies improves the responsiveness and effectiveness of not only physical security staff, but also investigators, IT staff and other business resources.

Integration with, or video enabling of, 3rd party security equipment such as Access Control systems and alarm panels breaks down silos of proprietary functionality, creates easier systems use and leverages overall technologies more efficiently. Fifth Third Bank Standardizes on March Networks Financial Solution for Powerful Security and Fraud Defense

March Networks® (TSX: MN), a global provider of intelligent IP video solutions, today announced that Fifth Third Bancorp has initiated an upgrade program of its existing March Networks’ video surveillance systems across more than 1,300 full-service retail banking branches, data centers, corporate offices, and operations and cash handling facilities. One of the top 15 banks in the U.S., Fifth Third Bank has already started deploying 12,000 new March Networks IP and analog cameras, and will upgrade to new 4332 C Hybrid Network Video Recorders (NVRs) nationwide. The bank is also piloting the March Networks Searchlight portfolio of intelligent data analytics to proactively detect and reduce losses from fraud at ATMs and teller lines.

“The March Networks video surveillance solution has consistently delivered solid results for us,” said Mike Neugebauer, Vice President and Senior Manager, Safety and Security at Fifth Third Bank. “The new hybrid platforms offer impressive IP performance and work with our existing March Networks video management software, making the transition simple and cost-effective. We’re also very interested in the Searchlight applications, which would allow us to securely correlate our surveillance video with transaction data, license plate data, and facial images. We believe these banking analytics could help us identify fraud earlier and gather evidence more quickly to significantly reduce losses.”

The orders follow a recent industry report by IMS Research that recognizes March Networks as the #1 provider of banking surveillance systems in the Americas. Worldwide, more than 450 banks and credit unions currently use the company’s proven financial solutions, citing scalability, unparalleled reliability and centralized video management as key system benefits.

Fifth Third Bank will upgrade to the 4332 C Hybrid NVR, which will double its existing IP camera support and expand evidence storage. It is also deploying a mixture of March Networks MegaPX WDR MiniDome IP cameras and WDR Indoor Dome cameras throughout its retail bank and critical infrastructure facilities. The cameras’ Wide Dynamic Range feature balances scenes with both low and bright light – guaranteeing clear images even in challenging environments such as retail banking branches, where sunlight streaming through large windows can cause subjects in a surveillance scene to appear silhouetted against the bright backdrop.

The March Networks Searchlight portfolio combats two of the most significant exposures financial institutions face today: ATM skimming and bank card fraud, which amount to an estimated $1 billion in losses annually. Searchlight Financial Transaction Investigation software synchronizes ATM and teller transaction records with detailed video evidence. This streamlines search and case management processes, improves investigator performance and reduces associated costs. Searchlight Skimming Detection, Image Tracker and License Plate Tracker applications speed investigations and strengthen case evidence to help banks more effectively combat ATM skimming, cash harvesting and other fraudulent incidents. (Watch a Searchlight video overview)

“Financial institutions around the world have selected March Networks video and data systems to gather better business intelligence and maximize returns,” said Net Payne, Chief Marketing Officer, March Networks. “The decision by Fifth Third to upgrade with our financial solution further underlines the bank’s confidence in our ability to provide a superior return on investment.”

March Networks Doubles IP Video Capabilities in Best-Selling Hybrid Recording Platforms

March Networks is proud to introduce five new products that make it easier, faster and more cost-effective for customers to increase IP video surveillance capabilities across their operations. The products include new additions to the company's leading hybrid video recording platforms - recognized earlier this year as the best-selling enterprise DVRs in the Americas*. They also include new high-definition (HD) IP cameras, and a cloud-based mobile application designed to solve many of the issues inherent in current mobile video offerings, and integrate seamlessly into standard IT environments.

March Networks® (TSX: MN), a global provider of intelligent IP video solutions, announced that it is the #1 supplier of video surveillance equipment in the Americas banking market as ranked by IMS Research in its report “Vertical Insights: Video Surveillance and Security in Banking and Finance - 2011 Edition”.

More than 450 banks and credit unions currently use March Networks Financial Solutions globally, including six of the top 10 U.S. banks, five of the seven largest banks in Mexico, the majority of Canada’s top five financial institutions, and leading banks across Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific. The solutions provide centralized video surveillance and fraud defense across an organization’s entire operation, from retail banking branches, ATM lobbies and parking lots, to corporate offices, vaults, cash counting areas and data centers.

“We are very proud of our top market share ranking and continue to see strong growth opportunities on a global basis in this very important category. Losses from fraudulent activities, such as ATM skimming and cash harvesting, are a global problem and are estimated to cost banks more than $1 billion in annual losses. With this growing threat, banks are increasingly turning to March Networks to help them protect their bottom line,” said Peter Strom, President and Chief Executive Officer, March Networks.

One of March Networks’ top-tiered U.S. financial customers, for example, said it had tripled its annual fraud recovery target and saved millions of dollars in profits after deploying the company’s Financial Transaction Investigation (FTI) software and hybrid video surveillance system. In addition to FTI, March Networks’ Financial Solutions include Searchlight Skimming Detection and advanced case management software that enables banks to conduct investigations quickly, lower costs per investigation, and build stronger case evidence to support successful prosecutions.

The portfolio also includes powerful video management software, high-definition IP cameras, and industry-leading hybrid network video recorders (NVRs) that protect customers’ existing investments in analog CCTV infrastructure while supporting a cost-effective migration path to all-IP video.

This is the second time in as many months that March Networks has been recognized for its leading position in the Americas marketplace. The company was also ranked the #1 provider of enterprise DVRs in the Americas by IMS Research in its report “The Americas Market for CCTV and Video Surveillance Equipment – 2011 Edition”.

March Networks Selected for Critical Infrastructure Project in Italy
–– March Networks® (TSX: MN), a global provider of intelligent IP video solutions, today announced that it has been selected along with local partner Campus s.r.l to provide its Video Management System (VMS) platform and advanced video analytics for the protection of 50 remote solar farms across southern Italy.

Italy currently represents the second largest market in the world for solar farms. The sites can cost millions or hundreds of millions of dollars to build depending on their size and design, and may operate for years before those costs can be recouped. Most are located in isolated rural areas, making them prime targets for the night-time theft of valuable solar panels and copper materials, which can cause delays in energy production and economic success. In one recent incident, 230 solar panels were stolen from a single site in Italy, at a cost to the operator of EUR 250,000.

The March Networks VMS software was selected for its scalability, and provides the high-performance and efficient video management needed to effectively secure dispersed critical infrastructure sites. The company’s PTZ IP cameras and four-channel Edge encoders feature both industry-leading H.264 and MPEG-4 video compression to support flexible video streaming in low bandwidth environments. When combined with the advanced intelligence and event-recognition features in the March Networks’ intrusion detection analytics, the system is programmed to only initiate video transmission to central monitoring stations when alarms are triggered. The alerts are confirmed by recorded images or real-time evidence, which allows monitoring staff to assess and quickly determine an optimal solution to the threat. As a result, the monitoring is more focused and fewer resources are needed.

“It is cost-prohibitive to monitor all of the farms on a 24/7 basis, but with solar panels and copper scrap increasing in value, they represent a significant theft risk,” said Paolo Matarrese, Sales Representative, Campus s.r.l., “Stolen or damaged equipment must not only be replaced at the operator’s cost, but can also disrupt energy production significantly. We selected the March Networks solution for its high reliability, remote video management and integrated analytics, which combine to provide the security intelligence our customers need to guarantee uninterrupted solar energy production.”

“Critical infrastructure operations are often very expensive to build, widely-dispersed, and difficult and costly to secure,” said Net Payne, Chief Marketing Officer, March Networks. “Our solutions support the centralized monitoring and management of hundreds or thousands of remote sites and provide our customers with the reliability and cost-effectiveness they require.”

March Networks announced two separate contract wins totaling $6.2 million with the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA). Oregon County Selects March Networks Solution to
Secure Critical Infrastructure

March Networks® (TSX: MN), a global provider of intelligent IP video solutions, today announced that the Columbia 9-1-1 Communications District in Columbia County, Oregon, has standardized on a March Networks video surveillance solution to secure the communications infrastructure it relies upon to coordinate fire, police and paramedic response services.

The solution enables the 9-1-1 district to focus on its public safety mandate by significantly reducing the resources needed to protect and maintain its remote sites. It also helps ensure the integrity of the network vital to the management of approximately 80,000 emergency calls annually.

From its central call and dispatch center in St. Helens, Columbia 9-1-1 uses the solution to remotely monitor multiple radio towers located throughout a 680 square mile (1,094 square kilometer) radius. Live video from surveillance cameras and March Networks 4000 C Series Networked Video Recorders located at each site is streamed via the district’s existing microwave radio network to St. Helens.

The video is then displayed on both overhead monitors and dispatchers’ computers using March Networks’ VideoSphere® SiteManager software and Edge Decode Station. Staff can also easily review or download recorded video evidence over the network.

“We are seeing increased demand from state and local governments for integrated solutions that enhance infrastructure security and support comprehensive communications and emergency response,” said Peter Strom, President and CEO, March Networks. “In response, we continue to deliver high-performance IP video solutions optimized for network efficiency, and provide end-to-end interoperability working with best-of-breed telecommunications companies as a founding member of the Secure City Technology Alliance.”

Columbia 9-1-1 engaged its security and IT providers, as well as its systems integrator Huser Integrated Technologies of Portland, to identify the best video solution for its requirements. Huser, a March Networks certified solution provider, referred the district to several customers who, in turn, recommended March Networks.

“We are very happy with the March Networks solution,” said Steve Watson, Systems and Facilities Specialist with Columbia 9-1-1. “Our priority goal is to operate quickly and smoothly in every emergency situation and the March Networks solution enables us to do that. The system is easy to use, which accelerated how quickly we could deploy and start to use the technology throughout our district. We have already provided video evidence from the system to assist in police investigations.”

Mexico’s Banorte Selects March Networks Financial Solution in $1.2 Million Deal

March Networks® (TSX: MN), a global provider of intelligent IP video solutions, today announced that Banorte – one of Mexico’s five largest national banks – has selected the company’s video management software and hybrid NVRs to upgrade its existing surveillance systems across more than 1,100 branches. The win with Banorte, valued at approximately $1.2 million, builds on March Networks’ success providing its Financial Solutions to a growing customer base that currently includes more than 400 financial institutions worldwide.

For the past five years, Banorte has relied on March Networks for security and high-quality video evidence. The financial institution will now deploy the company’s next-generation systems to take advantage of integrated case management and fraud investigation tools, and prepare for future fraud prevention applications available in the Financial Solutions portfolio. Banorte continues to select the March Networks offering based on its ability to outpace competitive offerings in such areas as up-time levels, scalability, and ease of operation.

“The March Networks solution delivers the reliability and critical video management we need to effectively safeguard our customers, staff and operations,” said Banorte’s Security and Protection group. “It also gives us the flexibility to deploy IP cameras and advanced analytics when and where required.”

In addition, the solution’s exceptional video compression will enable Banorte to reduce its bandwidth usage by as much as 25 percent. The improved efficiency is important given Mexican government legislation that requires banks to send video surveillance images from every alarm over low-bandwidth connections to a Seproban central monitoring location in a coordinated effort to combat crime.

“Hundreds of financial institutions around the world are using our proven solutions to enhance security across their enterprise and reduce losses from fraud and other criminal activity,” said Paul Novak, March Networks General Manager, Global Financial Solutions. “Many of these banks, such as Banorte, are long-term March Networks customers who not only continue to select our solutions but also recommend them to their industry peers.”
