Maher Terminals in Port Elizabeth, New Jersey, USA select JVC to monitor truck traffic and loading areas throughout a 300-acre facility

In Port Elizabeth, the United States, New Jersey-based Maher Terminals, one of the world's largest independent multi-user container terminal operators, relies on JVC to enhance traffic monitoring of the facility and loading areas and cranes loading containers onto the ships.

The company utilises JVC’s VR-N1600U network video recorders (NVR) and VN-C655U high performance IP-network based dome cameras. Here, Maher Terminals can easily provide access for up to 10 users to view terminal activities simultaneously to assure efficiency, traffic management and equipment performance.

“Maher is responsible for handling our customers’ cargo as expeditiously and economically as possible. As a leader in innovative cargo documentation and management systems, we require the highest quality products to complement our operations, which is why we chose JVC’s cameras and network video recorders,” said Louis J. Allora, director of crane maintenance and engineering, Maher Terminals LLC. “JVC’s cameras are very reliable and the interface is easy to use, so we’re able to quickly analyse video from a specific event. A lot of other interfaces are difficult to navigate; simple video downloading or adjusting camera parameters is very time effective with JVC.”

“JVC is happy to have been selected by Maher Terminals, a vital player in the cargo movement chain. Our surveillance solution is extremely flexible and scalable and complements Maher Terminals requirements now and in the future,” said Geoff Anderson, National Marketing Manager, Security Products, JVC Professional Products Company in the USA.

Maher Terminals’ traffic monitoring system utilizes the JVC VN-C655U pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ) cameras located in the terminals entry and exit complex, which handles more than 4,000 trucks a day. Monitoring the trucks enables Maher to ensure that trucks are loading and unloading containers properly, which helps Maher Terminals maintain excellent customer service. They also monitor traffic flows to alleviate backups. The VN-C655U 360° continuous rotation mechanism provides fast and accurate PTZ operation with superb accuracy.

The second system, monitors crane activity of cargo being loaded on and off vessels. Two cameras are installed on each crane, one on the back of the crane to monitor work being done under the crane and one camera in the cab to provide a direct view of the crane loading and unloading containers on and off the ships.

The crane cameras are networked to the VR-N1600U NVR enabling real-time viewing of all camera activity. With the VR-N1600U, Maher Terminals can view, record and playback video from any of the crane’s cameras. This enables Maher Terminals to investigate any incidents that may occur by reviewing the recordings to determine what caused the incident and develop prevention strategies to avoid a reoccurrence in the future.

“The cameras on the crane experience constant vibration and considerable impact every time the crane handles a cargo container,” added Allora. “And knowing the VR-N1600U comes with pre-installed Milestone XProtect software, which is widely industry accepted, we weren’t concerned about non-compatibility issues when we grow the system in the future.”

Maher Terminals remotely monitors the Lane Complex cameras with up to 15 simultaneous users and the crane activity with up to 12 simultaneous users, which utilises Milestone’s PC-based Client Application. With the Milestone Client Application, a user can monitor IP or analog-based cameras from non-dedicated desktop PCs.

Later this year, Maher plans to expand its monitoring by adding cameras to nine more cranes and additional VR-N1600U network video recorders.

JVC’s highly durable TK-C686 Series PTZ dome cameras are now available and come in the form of two models including an indoor dome camera (TK-C686E) as well as the company’s first dome camera with external outdoor housing (TK-C686WPE) which is IP66 rated.

“What’s marvelous about these new cameras is the durable Direct Drive Motor and we’re expecting installers to love this high-quality feature” says Yash Patel, Executive Director, CCTV Europe.

JVC’s Direct Drive Motor precisely operates its pan mechanism for long-term preset positioning and with an accuracy of 0.03 degrees, it far outshines the more conventional belt-type of motor drives. The cameras have up to 100 presets and extremely fast pan speeds to quickly trace objects. They also have the lowest and smoothest pan speeds for enhanced manual operation and observation of the image subject (ranging from 0.04 to 500 degrees per second).

“The Direct Drive Motor combined with advanced features such as a powerful 36x zoom, Super LoLux™ technology, IR cut filter as well as motion detection, auto-tracking and privacy masking makes the TK-C686 Series the perfect cameras for most operations running 24/7” adds Yash Patel.

For easy installation and maintenance, each camera has one-touch lock and release mechanism.

JVC extends IP camera line-up with dual-stream MPEG-4/Motion JPEG compact fixed colour camera

JVC Professional Europe has extended its comprehensive IP camera product line up with the introduction of a new high-resolution fixed IP network camera, model VN-V25U. The VN-V25U comes in a 23% smaller enclosure than its predecessor; the VN-C20U and incorporates the most advanced electronics for IP surveillance. The VN-V25U will be first demonstrated to the International security industry on the JVC stand 063 during the IIPSEC 2008 show.

The VN-V25U produces outstanding image quality and the camera has the unique feature of providing full motion dual stream VGA resolution for both Motion JPEG and MPEG-4 images at 30 frames per second (fps). Here, operators are able to view images in real-time and at a low bandwidth MPEG-4. When an alarm is triggered, the camera can stream real-time Motion JPEG images for continuous and high quality recording.

The Wide-D function incorporated inside the camera is the equivalent to the conventional wide dynamic range function found inside traditional analogue CCTV cameras and allows pictures to be adjusted to identify details of the subject even in backlit conditions.

The camera is equipped with an Easy Day/Night function providing higher sensitivity for monitoring at night time or in dark places and the minimum required illumination is 0.04 lux in B&W mode. The camera is ideal for winter time or in extreme heat conditions and is operable in temperatures ranging from -10o to 50o centigrade.

The camera utilises Power over Ethernet (PoE) or separate AC24V power. PoE enables the camera to be operated and powered from a single cable from a power hub device.

“The introduction of the VN-V25U is a result of JVC’s commitment to investing in the development of innovative products that meet the stringent requirements and needs of a wide variety of security applications,” said Yash Patel, Executive Director, CCTV Europe at JVC Professional Europe. “All JVC IP products all have an open architecture and are designed to integrate with any existing surveillance infrastructure, offering our customers the best security solution available.”

Camera set up is very easy and can be achieved using Internet Explorer. Additional features of the VN-V25U include dual API support for JVC protocol and Verint VSIP, standard 10/100BaseT interface for connection to a LAN, WAN or to the Internet.

The VN-V25U may be combined with JVC's VR-N900U or VR-N1600E network video recorders to provide an all-JVC digital IP security solution for small to enterprise level security systems.

VN-V686 IP-network PTZ camera series launched by JVC at IIPSEC

The new VN-V686 series from JVC comprises two new cameras models including an indoor IP PTZ camera, model VN-V686U and an IP66 rated dome camera with outdoor housing, model VN-V686WPU. The series will be first previewed at the upcoming IIPSEC 2008 show on stand 063 between 29 and 31 January 2008.

The new IP camera series does all you would expect of a top of the range security camera. They use a progressive scan CCD producing outstanding image quality. The 36 x optical zoom is one of the highest zooms available in the market today, making it suitable for most applications. Both cameras come with highly sensitive Super LoLux™ technology and a True Day/Night function with on and off infrared filter to ensure advanced night time monitoring (at a minimum 0.04 lux, in black & white mode).

The Direct Drive Motor mechanism incorporated inside the cameras substantially increases the degree of accuracy in how it moves and locks on to objects (to 0.01 deg.). It is also completely silent in operation and has up to 100 available presets.

Advanced features included in the VN-V686 series include picture masking to blank out certain areas of an image ensuring privacy is maintained. Its auto-tracking function detects and tracks moving objects and the image stabilisation function is ideal for telephoto shooting avoiding the possibility of vibrating images due to camera tower shake.

The extremely accurate and fast pan and tilt movement of the cameras assists with rapid preset positioning (400 degrees per second), while the slowest movement of 0.04 degrees per second permits careful observation at high magnification.

Both VN-V686 cameras are capable of producing full-frame dual stream for simultaneous distribution of 30fps VGA MPEG-4 and 30fps VGA Motion JPEG streams.

Yash Patel, Executive Director, CCTV Europe at JVC Professional Europe outlined some of the additional benefits of the new series: “The ultra-quiet Direct Drive Motor mechanism enables the new series to pan and tilt at only 35dB which means it can be used in libraries, hospitals or even police interview rooms without any disturbance.

This is a really lightweight device, so it’s easy to handle and scores high on health and safety; and although its outdoor housing is vandal-proof and weather-proof, it has a ‘one-touch’ lock/release mechanism making it very straightforward to install and remove the camera for maintenance. But above all it’s sensitive and reactive, and provides high resolution images – it’s all that the IP security industry has been asking for.”

Additional features include dual API support for JVC protocol and Verint VSIP, AC24V power, standard 10/100BaseT interface for connection to a LAN, WAN or to the Internet. The cameras may be combined with JVC's VR-N900U or VR-N1600E network video recorders to provide an all-JVC digital IP security solution for small to enterprise level security systems.
