Iomniscient and Bank Security

Banks are unique organisations. Their product is money. For this reason they are often the target of an attack. Banks have many areas that need protection from a security perspective and then, like other organisations they have other requirements too in other departments.

Where there are many branches it may not be feasible to guard them all and it would make sense to have them remotely monitored. Installing video based intrusion alarms can allow the guard at the central monitoring station to see the intruder, confirm that it is not a false alarm and take some action.

Retail Banks also have use for the more traditional applications such as Counting and Queue Management. In fact customer service may be a far more important issue as it is usually part of the value proposition of the bank.

The ATMs (automatic teller machines) that many banks have outside their branches and in unmanned locations such as shopping malls are also the targets for criminals. The latest attempt at identity theft centres on the installation of very small devices above the slot where the customer is supposed to enter his card. These devices can copy the identity information from the magnetic strip. The bank needs to detect if such a device has been implanted by criminals on their ATM. A camera (with an IQ 180 level system) could identify a small device that had been placed on their ATM and the bank could then take action to remove it as well as to identify who installed the device. Iomniscient and City Security
City Surveillance needs can be quite varied. There will be groups that are responsible for protecting building assets. Graffiti and Vandalism detection can be an important application for them. Traditional motion detection systems can detect graffiti but they would also detect all the many passersby on the street. A non-motion detection algorithm based system is required (IQ 140) to detect the graffiti while ignoring innocent people who are just walking past. In one European city they had a very severe graffiti problem. Each time the buildings were repainted the graffiti artists struck again. Repainting buildings can be very expensive and hence the city council had to find a solution. They put in an IQ 140 level Graffiti detection system mounted on a van. Using infrared cameras the system was able to catch the culprits on the first day after it was installed. The news spread very quickly among graffiti artists and the problem disappeared overnight – at least in their neighbourhood.

Other groups will require the city surveillance system to monitor traffic. Often there are special slow speed zones near schools or beside shopping malls and hospitals Monitoring such locations has traditionally been very expensive because the detection of speed and the recognition of vehicles previously required significant civil works such as the digging of roads for the laying of magnetic loops as well as very expensive cameras. With modern systems where the video analysis system can do everything (triggering of the event, detection and recognition) the economics have changed and these systems can be widely implemented at a tenth of the cost of the traditional systems.

The most important focus of city surveillance systems however is on the people themselves. The objective is to keep people safe and prevent accidents or criminal activities. Not all activities are easy to detect. As has been discussed it is very difficult to detect if two people are fighting as this can take many different forms.

However many associated behaviours can be detected. For instance, if a person falls down as a result of a fight, this can be detected. If a person begins to run suddenly – this too can be detected. If crowds gather suddenly this could be a symptom of some unusual activity as well. Having a system that can monitor various types of human behaviour can help the city’s officials ensure the safety of their citizens. Download PDF or go to Iomniscient

Iomniscient and Hotel and Hospitality Security
The hospitality industry consists of a range of organisations from hotels to casinos, from restaurants to private clubs. What are their unique security concerns? Perhaps the largest numbers of cameras are implemented in casinos around the world. Their objective is to keep a very close eye not just on the punters who come in to gamble but also on their own staff as the evidence shows that invariably there is some internal involvement in most fraud cases in these environments.

In restaurants and hotels a key problem is the theft of alcohol and food. The management of these organisations is usually focused on the front of the organisation - the cooking, the serving, the customers, the ambience and the marketing.

A very simple system can be set up to record each person who enters or leaves the back entrance. Event based recording of this type saves storage which can be expensive specially when one needs to keep the footage for a very long time. Going beyond the security aspects of a video analysis system, hotels can also use a video analysis system for improved customer service. Every morning people order breakfast using room service. Often the used trays are left outside their doors and by the middle of the morning the hotel corridor can become an obstacle course for the guests. An object detection system can detect these trays and send an alarm to house keeping advising them that they need to go and pick them up.

Another very important customer service application can be queue management.

Iomniscient and Hospital Security
All of us have had some interaction with hospitals and other health care facilities. If we have been lucky enough to avoid having to stay there oneself, one may have had to go there for the birth of a child. Or an aged parent may be in a care facility.
As lay people we all tend to be more aware of all the issues facing our various hospitals and other health care facilities. Labour wards where babies are born are usually filled with doting parents, grandparents and friends. However geriatric wards, dementia wards and old age facilities

in general tend to be poorly attended other than by the patients and a few staff. In such facilities it can be important to know if someone has slipped and fallen on the way to the lunch room. The largest number of falls happen in the bathroom. As such the management of such facilities have to draw a fine line between the privacy rights of the patient and the need to ensure that they are safe and still upright.

Certainly in the public areas such a system is invaluable. Especially in dementia wards a Facial Recognition system is also valuable. Uncle Johnny may wander off and get lost. He may forget where he is and may not know how to get back. The system can track where he was last seen.

In more traditional health care facilities there is another major issue – the protection of drugs, syringes and other related materials from theft. A video analysis adjunct to an inventory management system can be use to record the face of a person every time he picks up some item in the stock room. If a box of drugs goes missing the system will have a record of every person who picked up a box from that area. Note that this is much more than a recording system. If a simple recording system is used one would be storing a lot of video footage of the empty stock room as it would usually only be visited in short bursts. A motion detection system would also not be of particular use as one does not need to see who entered or left the room. The key is to know who picked up an item from a particular section of the stock room. For this one would require an IQ 140 level theft detection system. Download PDF or go to Iomniscient

Iomniscient and Law Enforcement Security
Every country has a police force. They have a different role and hence a different requirement to traditional security groups. They may require surveillance, for example, to watch a house over a period of time to see who comes and goes. They may want to know if certain cars stop outside the house and they may want to know if a crowd of people gather near by. The surveillance may be needed over a long period of time – possibly for several months.

Instead it is possible to use a couple of cameras for the surveillance. Officers are then only required to view the video footage where they can easily “jump to the events” that have been detected.

IQ-Police is based on iOmniscient's IQ product series -
renowned as the most Intelligent Video Analytics system in the world. Iomniscient and Prison Security
In any prison environment it is extremely important to ensure that security level is being maintained all the time. iOmniscient’s unique internationally patented technology Non-Motion Detection can help to monitor any suspicious objects being placed in the perimeter of the prison even under constant obscuration. Only iOmniscient’s software is capable of working under these environments.

Prison staff need to be notified every time a person crosses a particular barrier. Whenever an officer enters a cell block or if a prisoner is brought out the event needs to be recorded. Counting can be important. – it is important to know the numbers who entered a certain area and the number of those who have left it.A very important application is the detection of items that are thrown over the perimeter wall into or out of the prison. The object could be something as small as a mobile phone. The authorities, however, will normally want to be made aware of these objects and would confiscate them. So any object detection system aimed at detecting small objects that get thrown into or out of the prison needs to cope with people being present in the scene at the time.

IQ-Prisons is based on iOmniscient's IQ product series - renowned as the most Intelligent Video
Analytics system in the world. Case Study - Transport Security - Bus and Rail Security by Verint
Eurotransport BVG.

For transport operators, protecting their passengers, staff and their assets is of paramount importance, and increasingly so. Whether on buses, trains or trams, indeed on any passenger transport, combating crime and dealing with the fall-out of crime is a major concern, fraught with challenges. For Eurotransport, Robert Wint, Marketing Director of EMEA Verint Solutions interviewed Mr. Burkhard Eberwein, Head of Vehicle Management (Bus) Department at BVG, who examines the challenges and developments concerning security for public transport users in Berlin

Perhaps the greatest challenge is how to find the most viable, most cost-efficient and most effective way of dealing with the serious issues of violence and vandalism that plague network operators, reduce passenger numbers and impact significantly on the bottom line. The solutions, too, must have the support of those passengers and the wider public at large, not to mention the authorities, in order for those solutions to work.

One network operator that can genuinely claim to be at the forefront of providing a safe environment for staff and passengers alike is Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), one of the largest bus operators in the European local public transport sector. BVG’s network comprises nine underground railway lines, 22 tram lines and 201 bus routes as well as six ferries on Berlin’s waterways.

Wholly owned by the State of Berlin since 1929, when BVG was established in 1847 it
operated five bus routes with 20 horse-drawn vehicles and 120 horses. Today its vehicles carry approximately 900 million passengers – equivalent to over 2.4 million people very day – and its bus routes alone total more than 1,600km. Almost 6,600 unidirectional bus stops (total of day and night services combined) are available.

Vandalism and petty crime BVG suffers no more than any other transport
operator in Europe from incidences of petty vandalism on its buses, or other outbreaks of antisocial behaviour. Assaults on drivers or other passengers are thankfully still the exception, rather than the rule, but BVG nevertheless understands it has a public duty to try and reduce any examples of crime on its buses to nil, if at all possible.

Securities Commission Headquarters Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The new Malaysia Securities Commission Headquarters facility was designed around the
concept of achieving a distinctive modern form, interpreted from traditional design to
reflect Malaysia’s history, cultural roots and future aspirations. The roof, together with
the layered facade, shelters the building from the tropical heat and glare. The facade
is designed to be climatically responsive to the external environment.

The entire building facade has a hollow double skin, which forms a buffer between indoor
and outdoor temperatures and climatic conditions. As a result, transparency to and
from the building is optimized, daylight is maximized and energy consumption is greatly
reduced. The building made history when it was built since it is Malaysia’s first modern
facility with fully ductless air conditioning. Cold air is supplied through the raised floor.
The facility also offers the first truly flexible office work environment which allows easy
reconfiguration of air supply grills, power, communications, data, central vacuum, central
shredder and IT systems. Johnson Controls was given the task of designing an open,
integrated building management and control system for the facility.

To protect the institution’s assets and the assets of its customers as Liberty’s network of branches grows and becomes more geographically dispersed.

The Solution
Verint® Networked Video Solution

The Bottom Line
Liberty chose a Verint Networked Video Solution — a computer-based, digital video surveillance recording and retrieval system that automatically captures, digitizes, and compresses high-resolution video images of bank transactions and other
events. Video images can be accessed either on site or remotely via a secure Windows-based application. Retrieved images can then be enhanced, printed, faxed, and emailed. Liberty has found that the ability to quickly make video images
available to law enforcement is one of the system’s greatest advantages.

by Johnson Controls.

Clackamas County is a growing Oregon community of 362,000 with a mix of urban and
rural populations with divergent needs. County workers had outgrown existing space
at 17 offi ces spread out around the county. Many of these were outdated facilities with
operations costs increasing year after year. County leaders knew they needed a new
centralized facility and wanted to build it with minimal impact on the environment. But
with limited public funds, they were concerned about the ability to build and operate a
building in a timely manner to take advantage of low interest rates and availability
of construction materials.

Through a unique design-build-operate process in partnership with Johnson Controls,
Inc. and others, Clackamas County was able to swiftly construct a cost-effective and
sustainable building with the County’s fi nancial and environmental goals in mind. The

Case Study : CCTV in Railway Station Security by Mobotix

Deutsche Bahn (DB)

German railway company Deutsche Bahn (DB) gives high priority to keeping travelers informed. This explains why 220 million euros were invested in a single "Traveler Information System" project. The system is a technical and organizational platform that supplies consistent, reliable and up-to-date information about the current operating status to customers and employees alike. Thanks to this system, on-board personnel can, for example, use text messaging technology to communicate with operations control and to quickly inform passengers about any irregularities. Since station announcers and service staff are likewise linked to the system, passengers waiting at stations can receive the same information.

Security Solution

The announcement service is assisted by MOBOTIX technology. The cameras from the Kaiserslautern-based manufacturer are not only used to track the movements of DB's trains, but increasingly, they are also expected to perform security functions. As such, they play an important part in Deutsche Bahn's "SST program" (Service, Security and Tidiness), which also includes Magdeburg central station.

Strategic Challenge
Enhance surveillance and security to protect the critical infrastructure of this energy provider's extensive perimeters and remote facilities.

The Solution
Verint® Networked Video Solution

The Bottom Line
Idaho Power has relied on their Verint Networked Video Solution for several years, starting with three sites and expanding the system to seven locations, ranging from dams, power plants, and co-generation plants to the utility's corporate headquarters. The power company had a new gas turbine engine facility under construction and three new sites on the drawing board in 2005.

The Verint Networked Video Solution is specified for all of these new facilities in the planning phase, enabling easy installation as the sites are built.

Case Study - Airport Security by Verint
Detroit Metro Airport

Airport Shutdowns Cost Millions
In the last two months of 2001, there were 30 airport shutdowns in the United States alone. Breaches in security resulting in shutdowns cost the airline industry millions of dollars. Over 1,000 flights were delayed, and 434 planes had to have their passengers exit for re-screening. In the past, shutdowns have typically been the result of a security breach at the checkpoint. These breaches have mainly been caused by:

• A person running through the airport without stopping at the checkpoint
• Confusion caused by a passenger who was selected for secondary screening, but moved
through the checkpoint into a sterile area
• A person entering a sterile area through an exit lane, moving in the wrong direction

Integrated Alarm Systems: Key To Success

Detroit Metro, like other airports in the US and around the world, suffered shutdowns from breaches long before the incidents of September, 2001. By integrating their surveillance system with alarm systems, Detroit Metro Airport has alleviated costly shutdowns and saved both time and money. Using Verint® Networked Video Solutions, airport security is notified immediately of any breach at a checkpoint and is
able to immediately notify other checkpoints to stop the processing of additional passengers.

Case Study - Port Security and Cargo Security by Verint
Port of Galveston
The Company
Located on the upper coast of Texas, the Port of Galveston provides easy access to the Gulf of Mexico and serves as a strategic port for trade between the United States and its international partners.

Operational Overview
The port stretches across an 850 acre campus and includes facilities handling all types of cargo, including containers, dry and liquid bulk, break bulk, roll on-roll off, refrigerated and project cargo, two cruise ship terminals handling more than 370,000 passengers per
year, and access to two national railway systems with direct connections to major US cities.

Strategic Challenge
In today’s climate, Port Director Steve Cernak and other directors of ports on coasts throughout the world are working to meet increasingly stringent security objectives.

The Solution
The Port recently implemented a Verint® Networked Video Solution to enhance security of its container facilities, passenger terminals, and perimeter.
“We researched video surveillance solutions and found that Verint offered the solution that provided all of the key elements we need,” Cernak said. “Technologically and economically, Verint offered the best solution given the vastness of the system we require. Because of the port’s size and scope, we found that the only way to connect to the system was to use wireless technology. In addition, the size and complexity of the system required an intelligent solution to manage all of the components.”

The Bottom Line
A Verint Networked Video Solution enables the Port of Galveston to enhance the security of its facilities by networking video across multiple locations using wireless and wired equipment. By applying advanced content analytics to extract actionable intelligence from live and stored video, the system helps secure facilities and perimeter from a central location.

The Port of Galveston uses a proprietary software analysis tool to determine the most effective and economical camera placement. By alerting security personnel to potential security threats as they occur, the Verint solution is designed to help the Port prevent security breaches and improve response time. In addition, the system is integrated
with the Port’s infrared illumination technology for low light visibility.
